The 2024 Roots Picnic saw a sea of attendees make their way to Philadelphia, PA, for the weekend (Jun 1-2) to witness what could be considered an amusement park for music lovers and culture commentators. Tens of thousands flooded the Mann at Fairmount Park for three stages of entertainment.
The Presser stage saw André 3000, Sexyy Red, Wale, Chioke, Q, QT7 Quanny, October London, SMINO, Leon Thomas, Amerie, Backyard Band, and Scarface. The Fairmount Stage included Lil Wayne, PJ Morton, The Roots, Trombone Shorty, Jill Scott, Nas, Kenya Vaun, BLK Odyssy, J. Period, Marsha Ambrosius, Black Thought, The Dream, Method Man & Redman, and more.
On Saturday (June 1), the Meth and Red joined J. Period’s Live Mixtape set where they performed their most beloved hits collaboratively and individually including “How High,” “Method Man,” “Da Goodness” and more.
What sent the crowd wild was when The Roots MC, Common, and Freeway joined Meth and Red for a freestyle to LL COOL J’s 1997 single, “4,3,2,1,” originally featuring DMX, Canibus and Master P. Additionally, Black Thought added his own verses on Wu-Tang’s “Protect Ya Neck,” Method Man’s “Bring the Pain,” Redman’s “Tonight’s Da Night,” Raekwon‘s “Ice Cream,” and GZA‘s “Shadowboxin.’”

Method Man and Redman’s performance at Roots Picnic came a day before hitting the Summer Jam stage where the reception wasn’t quite as welcoming.
The duo performed their same set for a majority younger crowd, where they were met with a few “boos” and lackluster reception. Following the show, Method Man took to Instagram to declare that he’d never perform at Hot 97’s Summer Jam again.
“Not our crowd at all.. thanks again, New York and the whole tri-state (that showed up to the event) plus Pete and Ebro I got love for you guys, but never again..” he wrote under a post of his and Redman’s set. “at this point the generation gap is just too wide for me.. #nevercomingback”
