Both are modeled after famous mixing consoles. They can enhance your mixing workflow and add a nice touch of analog color to your music.
Now, you might be wondering: why use channel strip plugins when there are many EQs and compressors that have a lot more features?
The answer is simple. A more streamlined workflow.
With a channel strip, you’ve got several modules in one plugin. And committing to mixing with a channel strip forces you to make decisions more quickly and not get bogged down by the details.
It can also help train your ear since you’re not relying on the visual feedback of something like a frequency spectrum when mixing with a channel strip.
Now, let’s take a look at these two channel strips.
bx_console SSL 9000 J (regular price $348) is modeled after the legendary Solid State Logic 9000 consoles that offered an extended low end, clean high end, and tons of distortion-free headroom.
This plugin features compressor, EQ, and gate/expander modules, with additional features like switchable E and G-style filters, compressor peak detection, and expander/gate hold.
It also gives you 72 different “TMT” channel emulations, which model the inconsistencies of a mixing console across its different channels.
On the other hand, bx_console AMEK 9099 (which normally sells for $447) was modeled after the Amek 9098i Master Console, which was designed by none other than Rupert Neve.
Like the 9000 J, this plugin features a compressor, gate, and EQ section, but also a limiter and extra stereo processing tools.
The EQ section gives you low and hi-pass filters as well as 4 bands, with an added “sheen” mode in the high band and a “glow” mode in the lows.
There are also “smooth” and “auto listen” controls that will solo the band you’re adjusting to assist you with dialing it in.
Brainworx plugins are available for Windows and macOS in VST2, VST3, AU, AAX DSP, and AAX Native formats. They also recommend a display resolution of 1280×960 px or higher.
