Tension is a newly released free clipper plugin from Carbon Fiber Plugins, available in VST3 format for Windows, with additional OS support currently “in development.”

Tension features a custom “Deep Fix” architecture under the hood, which the developer says sets it apart from typical hard clippers.

Tension employs 4X oversampling and uses 2nd-order maths to ensure a level of precision that some clippers won’t match. In theory, you’ll be able to drag more out of your sound with fewer nasty side effects, like aliasing noise.

Since this plugin is Windows only, and there are very few demos available, I’m relying entirely on Windows users to share their thoughts in the comments.

Mac users aren’t completely clipperless; just back in November 2025, we got two free soft clippers on the same day. We got KLYP from Voidstar Audio and Venomode’s Mesa Lite.
Actually, if we go back a few more days, we also got the Knock Clipper from Knock Audio; that was quite a week for clippers!

Here’s a quick breakdown of Tension’s key features!

It all starts with the Tension drive control. An advanced ADAA system lets you drive harder while maintaining a smooth, artefact-free sound.

The Pulse function sharpens the fastest hits in your audio, ensuring pristine, crisp hats and percussion without losing presence.

The Weave knob lets you shift tonal balance from bright to dark, and everything in between, with visual feedback.

Tension offers several interesting character-altering features: the Age and Character controls, and a wavefolder.

The Age and Character controls add a vintage feel by simulating the response of older hardware.

The Fold function takes a more aggressive approach, folding the audio back on itself, turning simple sounds into complex metallic timbres.

Carbon Fiber Plugins is a small development team based in Taiwan. Much of their work aims to recreate the grit and character of old Taiwanese and Japanese Hi-Fi/KTV systems, which is something a little different, and different is always worth checking out!

Please let us know your opinion of Tension in the comments!
