dBdone launched AI Chords, a plugin for generating chord progressions with a free tier.
The plugin is available for VST, AU, and AAX on macOS (universal) and Windows (64-bit only).
AI Chords is designed as a tool to spark inspiration for songwriters, producers, and beatmakers.
dBdone offers three AI Chords tiers, namely the free tier with up to 10 credits a month, the Bedroom tier for 100 credits a month (€10), and the Studio tier for 250 credits a month (€15).
You can also buy the app for a one-time payment of €89, but unlike the free tier, it only comes with 10 credits a month.
You can currently get the three paid products at 30% off by entering the introductory coupon code WELCOME30 at the Coupon Code field at the top of the dBdone dashboard and pressing enter.
dBdone produced a YouTube video that shows off what AI Chords can do, which is a good introduction to the plugin’s feature set.
AI Chords allows you to select a key and number of chords (4, 6, 8) and then enter a text prompt to generate the chords, such as “lo-fi jazzy melancholic chords.”
Once the AI generates the chords, you can mod the progression in several ways, such as with the parameters Velocity Range, Spread (which makes the performance more “natural”), Transpose, and note length (quarters, 8ths, 16ths).
You can also change where the chords start and finish in the bars using a slider.
After you’ve created the chord progression, just drop the MIDI of progression into your DAW and you’re off to the races.
To get AI Chords, head to the product page and hit the ‘Download now for free’ button. You’ll then be given the option of signing up with Google, Apple, or an email address.
After I provided an email address, dBdone instantly sent me a signup link. After you follow that link, click on the Products tab to download the macOS or Windows version.
In terms of applications, I could see AI Chords being useful to people who want to learn about how certain progressions are made and sound, as well as professionals, for example, career songwriters and beatmakers who want to speed up their workflow.
It could also form a starting point for songwriting and demoing as well.
With the increasing number of AI music tools on the market, it is hard to tell how much of today’s new music is already made with AI.
As these tools proliferate, no doubt an ever-increasing amount of modern music will be made with AI. Maybe 2025’s biggest hit will be made with AI? If not 2025, then maybe 2050.
It’s a brave new world, folks.
