Expert-Tested: Aviron Loadable Dumbbells Review (2025)

The best adjustable dumbbells have come a long way. The latest products have quick-changing adjustment mechanisms, quality materials and construction, and warranties to match the durability of fixed dumbbells.

With that in mind, adjustable dumbbells haven’t vastly improved in one area: aesthetics. As GGR founder Coop Mitchell has often remarked, many of them “come in any color you want…as long as it’s black.” Very few have a design that belongs outside of a garage gym.

Aviron is attempting to change that with their loadable dumbbell set. These loadable dumbbells are sleek, with warm and vibrant weight plates, likened to a sunset by GGR Everything Lead Reviewer Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC. However, is this sleek and sharp set of dumbbells worth its price tag? Let’s talk about it in this Aviron Loadable Dumbbells review.

Testing Top Dumbbells From Sunrise to Sunset

OK, I might be exaggerating the time spent on testing dumbbells at Garage Gym Reviews; if we spent all of our time testing dumbbells, we’d have no time for our expert team of certified personal trainers, nutrition coaches, and competitive athletes to test and review the top protein powders, kettlebells, weight benches, and more.

However, we’ve tested dozens of dumbbells—fixed and adjustable—and researched countless others since GGR’s start in 2014. You can be sure we bring expert and honest opinions to every product we try out.

GGR Everything’s Lindsay Scheele tested out the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells over several workouts. In using the stylish dumbbells, she noted and rated the adjustable dumbbells between 1 and 5 across several categories:

  • Construction and durability
  • Adjustment speed
  • Aesthetics and design
  • Dumbbell handle
  • Warranty
  • Overall value

Aviron Loadable Weight Set

Product Highlights

* Plate-loaded adjustable dumbbells
* Available in 25- or 45-lb set
* Matte rubber-coated weight plates
* Medium diamond knurled handle

Pros

  • Sleek, vibrant design
  • 30-day risk-free trial period
  • Rotating bushings on handle
  • Durable pair of loadable dumbbells

Cons

  • Limited weight range
  • On the pricier side for a max weight of 45 lbs
  • No financing options

Aviron Loadable Dumbbells are a well-designed set of dumbbell handles that come with warm, colorful change plates. Available in 25- or 45-pound sets, these plate-loaded dumbbells can be pricey, but would certainly bring a warm aesthetic to a home gym space.

A Quick Look at the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells

Established in 2018, Aviron has been a force in fitness equipment, although it’s mostly been for rowing machines, treadmills, exercise bikes, and gamified programming from the Aviron App. The Aviron Loadable Weight Set is their first real foray into strength training, with a clean set of 25- or 45-pound dumbbells.

RELATED: Aviron Fit Bike Review

While the 45-pound maximum weight is a tad light compared to other top picks for adjustable dumbbells, these loadable weights would actually complement a home gym geared toward bodyweight exercises or cardio workouts—which is what Aviron already focuses on.

The 7.5-pound dumbbell pair comes with 10-, 5, 2.5-, and 1-pound plates, enclosed on each end by durable nylon collars. With these plates, you can have over 16 weight combinations, according to Aviron.

The cast iron plates are coated with a matte rubber, and the knurled handle is finished with a powder grey, giving the loadable dumbbells a sleek, fashionable look without being too loud. Very demure; very mindful.

Before You Buy

  • While these dumbbells are loadable dumbbells, you won’t be able to add on any weight plates of your own; the loadable sleeve length is just enough for the Aviron weight plates and collars.
  • Unlike their rowers, bikes, and treadmills, the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells don’t appear to have any financing options.

Are the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells Worth It?

“I’m so happy we got these dumbbells in, because they’re just beautiful,” says Lindsay, although she also recognizes that beauty can’t be the only selling point. While the construction of these dumbbells is solid, they also appear a bit overpriced compared to other competitors.

Obviously, compared to heavier adjustable dumbbells like PowerBlock, Snode, or NÜOBELL  Adjustable Dumbbells (which all cost about $800 or more), the Aviron dumbbells are less expensive—but you’re also getting less weight.

At a max weight of 45 pounds for $499, it ends up pricier than other dumbbells that actually provide a little more weight. Bowflex SelectTech 552s reach a max weight of 52 pounds for under $400. NordicTrack dumbbells reach 55 pounds and are also under $400. The REP Quickdraw Adjustable Dumbbells are also about $500, but reach a maximum weight of 60 pounds—and are also backed by a lifetime warranty.

Other limiting factors for the loadable dumbbell set’s value are the high starting weight and limited loadable sleeve length. With a 7.5-pound handle, it may be too heavy for people needing lighter weights for rehabbing, or for beginners just starting their fitness journey. “Some people may need a 2- or 3-pound dumbbell, and this just won’t work for you then,” adds Lindsay.

Rogue and Titan also offer loadable dumbbell handles, but their loadable sleeve length is much longer than the Aviron dumbbells, so you can potentially load the dumbbells with hundreds of pounds of weight. The limited weight range can hinder the versatility of the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells, so Lindsay rates the overall value a 3 out of 5.

It may not be a perfect match for every home gym setup, but people who appreciate a warm vibe in a minimalist studio or home gym space may like the aesthetic enough for the dumbbells to be worth it.

Great for:

  • Users who want lighter dumbbells to complement their bodyweight workouts
  • People who appreciate the aesthetic appeal of their gym equipment
  • CrossFit enthusiasts who want a rotating handle for dumbbell snatches

Not recommended for:

  • People on a budget
  • Weightlifters who want heavier dumbbell weights
  • Those who prefer quick-changing adjustment mechanisms

Using the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells

GGR Everything Lead Reviewer Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, tried out the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells in several movements and exercises—from bench press and goblet squats to dumbbell snatches and RDLs. Lindsay even did some unilateral movements, such as one-arm rows or split squats, which have been shown to help address muscular imbalances1 and improve core strength2.

“I really appreciate the rotating handle,” Lindsay remarks. “It helps make dynamic movements like the dumbbell snatch or clean a bit smoother.” The medium diamond knurling also keeps a good grip on movements as well.

However, since this is a plate-loaded dumbbell, the heads of the dumbbells won’t be flat, which can be a nuisance in some movements. “Since you have the dumbbell handle sticking out of either end of the dumbbells, it never feels comfortable when you place your weights on your legs before moving them to your shoulders for a seated press,” Lindsay explains. She also notes that holding it for goblet squats was awkward.

The loadable dumbbells are secured by fast-lock collars, heavy-duty nylon barbell collars that are secured or removed with a quick flip of the lock. Lindsay says it’s easy to use, but being a plate-loaded dumbbell, it’s still not nearly as quick as the rotation of a knob, or sliding pins. She rates the adjustment speed a 2.5 out of 5.

While she likes them in use, the maximum weight is still pretty limiting, only maxing out at 45 pounds. While this may work for some, adjustable dumbbells typically reach 50 or more pounds, so the Aviron dumbbells earn a 2 out of 5 for its maximum weight and weight range.

Construction and Durability

Although the adjustment speed and weight range may not be for everyone, the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells are built solidly. Lindsay rates the construction and durability a 4 out of 5, adding, “Although I’d never recommend you to drop dumbbells, these are probably durable enough to handle a few drops.”

Why’s that? The weight plates are coated with a matte rubber, so they’re close to miniature bumper plates. Also, the dumbbell handle has a metal construction with bushings and a snap ring design on each end, so it all should be able to handle a bit of dropping.

Still, with the bright color of the dumbbell weight plates, we’d worry about scuffing or marks on the plates down the road, so the dumbbell set doesn’t get full marks on its construction and durability.

Handle

Lindsay likened the dumbbell handle to a small Olympic barbell, and it has a lot of nice details that add to that comparison. The most obvious detail is the medium diamond knurling across the dumbbell handle, providing solid grip in dumbbell rows and presses.

Aviron-loadable-dumbbells-incline-bench.jpg (gdrive)

Another less-noticeable detail is the rotation system. Made with bushings, this gives the dumbbell sleeves a little spin, to allow the hand to naturally rotate through more dynamic movements, like snatches or clean and jerks.

With a powder grey finish, any scratches are likely to show up on the dumbbell handle, but with the rubber coating on the weight plates and the collars lined with a rubberized non-slip lining, it’s unlikely to show any wear and tear any time soon. Lindsay rates the handle a 4.5 out of 5.

Aesthetics

It’s hard to get around it; these dumbbells look nice. With the red-orange 10-pound plates shifting down to the white 1-pound plates, the dumbbells reminded Lindsay of a “70s sunset vibe,” like something you might see on a vintage tee. “I feel like I should have flowers in my hair while reviewing this,” she jokes.

Aviron Loadable Dumbbells vs REP Quickdraw Adjustable Dumbbells

REP Quickdraw

Product Highlights

  • Adjustable dumbbells ranging from 5 to 60 lbs
  • Patented Lock-N-Load steel switches for quick weight changes
  • Can be bought as 30-lb, 40-lb, 50-lb, or 60-lb pairs
  • Fully knurled handle
  • Durability tested for drops
  • Lifetime warranty

Pros

  • Very durable and tested for drops
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Can be expanded from 30 lbs up to 60 lbs
  • Quick weight changes

Cons

  • Adder weights can be a bit slower to add or remove
  • Longer dumbbell at max weight
  • Max weight is only 60 lbs

The REP Fitness QuickDraw Adjustable Dumbbell is the latest piece of innovative equipment for the company, with patented Lock-N-Load switches for quick weight changes. The dumbbells can go up to a maximum weight of 60 pounds, although they can be purchased at lighter weights and expanded from there. These dumbbells are extremely durable as well, tested for drops at various heights and angles; plus, they’re backed by a lifetime warranty.

If you’re unsure about the weight range of the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells, you may want to consider the Quickdraw Adjustable Dumbbells from REP Fitness. Both are priced at just under $500 for their heaviest option and have solid handles, but the Quickdraw Dumbbells go up to 60 pounds—15 pounds higher than the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells.

Along with the higher max weight, the REP Quickdraw starts at 5 pounds, making it a broader weight range than the Aviron set, which starts at 7.5 pounds. At 5 pounds, the Quickdraw Dumbbells can be a better starting weight for beginners, although the 5-pound weight increments might also be challenging for some.

Another plus for the REP Quickdraws is the lifetime warranty, which is a much larger warranty than Aviron’s 1-year warranty. The main draw that the Aviron set has over REP’s pair of dumbbells is the aesthetic and sleek look of them. If you want a stylish piece of home gym equipment for your home workout, the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells can still be worth it.

Customer Experience

For warranties, the industry standard of most dumbbells and adjustable dumbbells is a multi-year warranty—two or three years—with lifetime warranties becoming more common. The Aviron Loadable Weight Set comes just shy of the standard with a one-year warranty, earning it a 2 out of 5.

Aviron does have a generous 30-day return policy, however, with their risk-free home trial. You can try out their dumbbells (or any of their machines) for 30 days, and if you’re not satisfied, they’ll send the shipping labels. Just make sure you keep the original packaging, as Aviron won’t accept returns without it.

If you need to contact Aviron, you’ll be able to contact them via phone, email, or a contact form on their website. Additionally, they have a live chat available all week long (with limited hours).

Ordering the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells

The Aviron Loadable Weight Set can be purchased online directly through Aviron’s website, or through Amazon. They are available in 25- or 45-pounds, the only difference being that the 45-pound set has 10-pound plates as well. The 45-pound set includes:

  • (2) 7.5-lb dumbbell handles
  • (4) 1-lb weight plates
  • (4) 2.5-lb weight plates
  • (4) 5-lb weight plates
  • (4) 10-lb weight plates
  • (4) nylon dumbbell collars

Although Aviron offers financing for their cardio machines, this dumbbell set has no financing options.

Customer Reviews

As of this writing, there are no customer reviews on the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells—surprisingly, not even on Amazon. We’ll be sure to update this section as customers begin to give us their two cents on this weight set.

Final Verdict of Our Aviron Loadable Dumbbells Review

At nearly $500, the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells aren’t the cheapest option for adjustable dumbbells—especially at their limited weight range. If you’re looking for the most value, there are other dumbbell sets available. Still, if you’re looking for some home fitness equipment that’s built well, and designed with a warmer aesthetic than a set of dull, cast iron hex dumbbells, the Aviron Loadable Dumbbells might be right up your alley.

Here are a few highs and lows of the dumbbell set:

  • The dumbbell set is designed very well, with a unique and warm look for a pair of adjustable dumbbells.
  • While built solid, the Aviron dumbbells have a limited weight range, particularly with a 45-pound maximum weight.
  • Aviron provides a solid 30-day risk-free trial; however, we’d like to see a longer warranty and financing options.

Aviron Loadable Dumbbells: FAQs

Which company is best for dumbbells?

One of our favorite companies that are innovating adjustable dumbbells is REP Fitness which recently released their Quickdraw dumbbells, which have been tested for drops and reaches a maximum weight of 60 pounds. For people needing heavier weights, there’s also the REP x PEPIN Fast Series Adjustable Dumbbells, which can max out at 125 pounds. Both are also backed by a lifetime warranty—still fairly rare for an adjustable dumbbell.

What are the downsides of adjustable dumbbells?

While adjustable dumbbells can help you save space and money in your home gym, they are also typically more fragile than fixed dumbbells, so they’re more likely to break after an accidental drop. Additionally, some adjustable dumbbells might feel different than fixed dumbbells, due to a caged design or a longer length.

Are plate-loaded dumbbells good?

If you already have some weight and change plates in your home gym space, then plate-loaded dumbbells can be a great way to help you save money. They’re often inexpensive and durable, capable of holding up to a couple hundred pounds—so long as you can fit it on their loadable sleeves. Still, plate-loaded dumbbells won’t have a flat head, so they may feel uncomfortable in certain positions, such as resting on your legs before benching.
