Full Bucket Music releases FB-02, a free emulation of the Yamaha FB-01 module

Full Bucket Music has released FB-02, a free FM software instrument for Windows and macOS that recreates the sound engine of Yamaha’s 1986 FB-01 module.

If you follow Full Bucket Music, you’ll know the developer is best known for meticulous Korg emulations (Fury-68 being a recent example). So seeing a Yamaha clone from them is genuinely unexpected. As BPB reader mrg joked, this really does feel like we slipped into a different timeline. 😀

FB-02 focuses specifically on the FB-01’s four-operator FM sound generator, and the manual makes it clear that this wasn’t an easy project.

The original hardware relied on the Yamaha YM2164 chip, a largely undocumented cousin of the more famous YM2151, which meant a lot of trial-and-error reverse engineering for the developer.

The plugin includes the original factory ROM sounds, several curated collections, and a full program browser for navigating its seven banks of 48 patches. The manual notes that while the actual FB-01 limited user editing to two banks, FB-02 lets you edit everything, including what would have been ROM presets on the hardware.

One of the best things about FB-02 is that its interface doubles as an editor for the original FB-01. That’s pretty awesome if you own the hardware, because you can import and export SysEx, send patches directly, and manage banks far more easily than with vintage software editors from the ’80s.

Sound-wise, FB-02 offers eight classic FB-01 algorithms, four operators with identical parameter sets, and an extended feature list that goes beyond a simple emulation. You get MTS-ESP microtuning support, full MIDI Learn for every parameter, and a resizable interface.

As someone who likes compact FM synths, I love how accessible the interface feels. You can quickly tweak operator levels, envelopes, detuning, and inharmonic ratios, and the LFO section covers both amplitude and pitch modulation with pretty straightforward controls (considering it’s an FM synth).

It’s still classic Yamaha FM—quirky, though. The sound is occasionally harsh, but it’s much easier to approach and tame than many of the more feature-heavy FM clones.

If you enjoy digging through vintage patch libraries, the included collections (Factory, Kraftraum selections, MAZES blog packs, and more) offer plenty of exploration. The developer also makes it simple to import DX-era SysEx banks, so you can expand far beyond what ships with the plugin.

FB-02 is available for Windows and macOS in VST2, VST3, CLAP, and AAX formats, and AU on macOS. Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are provided where applicable.
