An app that lets you legally remix and mashup songs for social media has launched.
Hook, announced last October, is now available on Apple’s App Store for iPhone. It can create short snippets from popular songs for such apps as TikTok, while also compensating the sampled artist for using their music.
Hook lets you generate up to 30 seconds of remixed music. Its AI can generate mashups with other songs, different genre filters, additional sound effects, and even video effects. You can share results on TikTok, WhatsApp and Instagram. Some of the artists now available to remix on the app include Tiesto, Sadie Jean, KSHMR, Zach Hood, Quavo and Bing Crosby.
Gaurav Sharma, founder and CEO of Hook, comments: “This launch is a proud moment for our entire team as we introduce Hook to the world. Hook redefines how fans connect with the music they love, turning music listening into an active canvas for creativity.”
He adds: “For artists, this opens up entirely new horizons for expanding their influence and unlocking untapped revenue streams. We’re thrilled to lead the evolution of music expression and creativity, and we can’t wait for the world to experience music through Hook.”
When Hook was announced last year, Sharma explained that it was developed in response to many TikTok remixes being unofficial and escaping the app’s track usage detection tools.
He told TechCrunch, “We want to use AI to make it really easy for fans to remix and imprint their own creativity on their favourite moment of music. And we are doing all of it as a value proposition to the content owners and labels by acting almost like a content management system.”
Sharma also touched on Hook’s use of AI, highlighting that it’s been implemented with the goal of collaborating with artists and record labels rather than stealing their work: “Derivative songs don’t often have copyrights attached to them, so we are building a platform that leans into using AI while having a strong commitment to solving attribution and compensation problems.”
With the app launched, Hook is now looking to expand its library of songs and collaborate with more artists and labels.
