Jill Scott‘s new album couldn’t arrive any sooner. To keep the buzz and momentum going for her upcoming LP, Jilly from Philly has dropped “Pressha,” the second single from the anticipated To Whom This May Concern.
On the Adam Blackstone and Vincent “VT” Tolan-produced track, Scott sings about being romantically pursued by a man for years, only to realize that he needed to hide what they have. “I wasn’t the aesthetic, I guess I guess I get it/ So much pressha, to appear just like them,” she croons. “Pretty and cosmetic, elementary alphabetic/ So much pressha, to appear just like them.” But that’s just the surface level of this smooth number. When you deep it, the song is a soul-bearing anthem of liberation about false ideals and the invisible weight of society’s expectations.
“Pressha” follows Scott’s first single, “Beautiful People,” produced by Om’Mas Keith. In addition to the latter song’s release, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter announced To Whom This May Concern, her sixth studio album and first full-length project in 10 years. The project will feature Ab-Soul, J.I.D., Tierra Whack, and Too $hort, with additional production contributions from DJ Premier, Camper, Andre Harris, Seige Montracity, Trombone Shorty, Eric Wortham, and DW Wright.
To Whom This May Concern is slated to arrive on Feb. 13 via her independent label, Blues Babe Records, and The Orchard.
