Kevin Hart Gave Spank Horton One Piece of Advice That Changed Everything

Comedian Spank Horton reveals Kevin Hart’s career-changing advice, recalls some outrageous bachelor-party behavior and explains why he is finally ready to become a star in his own right.

Spank Horton Talks Kevin Hart’s Tough Love, Bachelor-Party Mayhem and Becoming His Own Star

For years, Will “Spank” Horton has built his career alongside Kevin Hart as a member of the Philadelphia-rooted comedy crew the Plastic Cup Boyz. With Joey Wells and Na’im Lynn, Horton toured the world, appeared in the Kevin Hart Presents: Plastic Cup Boyz comedy special and developed a reputation for quick improvisation. He also has an unmistakable personality. More recently, he has expanded into podcasting as co-host of The Underground Lounge with former NBA Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams, where comedy, sports and Hip-Hop collide.

Horton spoke with us at a recent Netflix event for 72 Hours, starring his brother-in-comedy. In our conversation, Spank joked about his own bachelor-party memories, revealed the advice from Hart that changed his self-image and explained why he is finally ready to take off the training wheels.

AllHipHop: Yo! sometimes I get “mad” at Kevin Hart. I’ll be like, “Come on, man. Give my man Spank a little more time.”

Spank Horton: But I can’t front. The last movie, he tried to get me in too, but the schedules conflicted. He told me, “Schedules should never conflict if it’s something that you really want to do.”

But I couldn’t. I was like, “Trust me, I want to do it. I ain’t going to turn down a movie just to do something else.” It was something else that was important that I had to do too, though.

But yeah, Kev looks out when he can. He can.

AllHipHop: What would you do if you had only 72 hours left to live?

Spank Horton: Seventy-two hours left to live? Wow. Well, the first 24, I’m going to share it with family and friends.

That last 48? I’m wilding out. I’m talking about robbing banks. I’m talking about going to strip clubs. I’m flying to different countries. I’m wilding out for my last 48 hours.

I’m going to go out with a bang.

AllHipHop: What was your craziest experience at a bachelor party?

Spank Horton: A crazy experience at a bachelor party? Woo! It was only like three guys, but it was like 20 girls. That was great. I don’t think that was crazy. I’m sorry.

You want something crazy?

AllHipHop: That sounds crazy to me.

Spank Horton: Well, I saw a bachelor, and I’m not going to say his name because he’s married and happily married.

But yeah, man. He was eating a lot of whipped cream off a lady’s body. He was eating a lot of whipped cream off her body. That was kind of crazy because I’m like, “Hey, bro, what are you doing?”

At the end of the day, that’s a dancer. You shouldn’t be doing that.

Yeah, that was crazy.

How has it been working with Kevin under his mentorship? What is the best advice he has given you?

Spank Horton: The best advice, he always says, “Man, just be yourself, Spank.” He said, “Man, your personality is one of a kind. Everybody draws to you when you’re out and when you’re having fun with everybody.”

He said, “Always just be yourself.”

I think that’s the best advice I ever got because when you come into the game, you look at people like, “Oh man, Denzel Washington.” You look at the stars and you want to emulate them.

But when Kevin told me that, that’s what made me feel like I’m my own star in my own right.

So, I think that’s the best advice.

AllHipHop: What’s in the future for you?

Spank Horton: The future is starting to do my own movies and TV and stuff like that.

Right now, I’ve got my podcast going. Shout out to The Underground Lounge and my partner Lou Will. The show brings Horton and Williams together for candid conversations touching comedy, basketball, culture and Hip-Hop.

But we’re going to start getting into more. I’m writing a movie right now. I already pitched it, and they love the idea. So, I just have to write it out, and then hopefully I’m going to star in it.

I’m going to start doing my own thing now.

AllHipHop: That’s what’s up. Congratulations.

Spank Horton: The training wheels are off. You know, I finally got the time in. I put the time in.

For sure. For sure.
