Lunacy Audio has made its CUBE Mini virtual instrument free until October 31st, 2025 (regular price $49). You can grab it now for free from Plugin Boutique or directly from Lunacy Audio.
CUBE Mini is the streamlined version of Lunacy’s flagship CUBE, a sample-based instrument powered by vector synthesis.
Instead of overwhelming you with every possible feature from the full release, the MINI version focuses on the core elements that make CUBE so cool: morphing between multiple sample sources in a 3D interface (which is absolutely fantastic), layering textures, and quickly building cinematic atmospheres.
And here’s the thing – I absolutely love CUBE Mini’s interface.
There’s just something fun about working on sound design with this type of game-like GUI instead of the usual sliders and knobs on a synth. Maybe it’s the gamer in me, and this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but for me, this is pure fun.
CUBE Mini comes loaded with over 120 presets and 35 sound sources. You get everything from guitars and pianos to synths, vocals, and ethnic instruments recorded by top LA musicians.
The sound library leans heavily toward cinematic pads, pulses, sequences, and soundscapes, but it is also flexible enough to cover electronic, hip-hop, ambient, and experimental genres.
CUBE Mini gives you eight parallel samplers. And here comes the fun part I mentioned earlier. You can blend these samplers together using “orbits,” which are basically motion presets that move a cursor around the cube, smoothly morphing between layers.
If you’ve used older vector synths like the Prophet VS or Korg Wavestation, you’ll recognize the concept, but Lunacy Audio expands it into three dimensions for more complex motion.
The result is a uniquely inspiring instrument with textures that evolve organically and feel more alive than what you get with basic modulation in a synth or sampler.
The built-in sample editor provides further control. You can reverse, loop, and arpeggiate sounds, or dive into envelopes, filters, step sequencers, and tuning adjustments per layer.
Each patch can be customized quickly without needing deep sound design knowledge. For quick inspiration, the preset generator can randomize sources, orbits, and FX, often producing surprisingly playable results.
Speaking of FX, CUBE Mini includes 13 effect modules, covering everything from filters, EQ, and distortion to delay, reverb, and a limiter. It’s a complete mini workstation for cinematic textures. And if you like what you hear, you can always upgrade to the full CUBE or add expansion packs for more sounds.
For me, the biggest strength of CUBE Mini is how fun it is, and having fun often leads to new musical or sound design ideas. It’s one of those plugins where you don’t get stuck hunting for the “right” sound but instead have fun exploring until it delivers something inspiring your way.
