Morphulus has released Spectrus, a modular multi-effect plugin with a permanently free tier and a paid Pro version.
Let’s cover the differences between the two versions first. The free version of Spectrus includes seven effects with no time limit. The Pro version, which unlocks all 21 effects, is priced at $49 as a one-time purchase and is listed as coming soon at an introductory price.
Spectrus is built around a 4-slot modular architecture, which is an instant plus for sound designers like yours truly. You can chain effects in series, parallel, or a mix of both, with each slot having its own level control, wet/dry mix, and routing options. Fun stuff!
Any slot can receive a signal from the main input or from the output of a previous slot, which allows for fairly flexible effect chains. Slots can also be locked to preserve settings while browsing presets, dragged to reorder, or copied and pasted between positions.
The seven free effects are Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, Echo, Plate Reverb, and Saturator. That’s a solid selection for a free plugin. These aren’t mindblowing on their own, but the modular routing system makes it more interesting than a typical fixed-effects chain.
The whole thing vaguely reminds me of the Effect Rack concept from Soundtoys. This is on a much smaller scale, of course, but has the same general idea of building custom signal paths from individual modules.
I also salute the little nod to Pink Floyd on the Prism Reverb interface (although I was always more into The Wall than The Dark Side of the Moon, but still, nice touch).
Anyway, I tried the free version before writing this, and the modulation effects are pretty good. The Echo is solid, too. I didn’t spend much time with the Plate Reverb and Saturator since I already have plenty of those plugins, but I’ll be doing more testing this weekend.
You can also try all 14 Pro effects in Demo mode, which gives access to every module in the plugin. The catch is a periodic audio fade. The output smoothly dips for a few seconds at random intervals, roughly every 45–75 seconds.
That makes Demo mode unsuitable for production, but it’s a good way to evaluate whether the Pro upgrade makes sense for your workflow.
The Pro tier adds Vintage Chorus, Ring Modulator, Rotary, and Sample & Hold on the modulation side; Tape Delay and Spectral Delay for delays; and eight reverb algorithms (Prism, Bloom, Ember, Shimmer, Freeze, Velvet Room, Velvet Hall, and Glacier). The full plugin also comes with 864 factory presets.
Spectrus is available as a VST3 plugin for Windows and in VST3 and LV2 formats for Linux. Mac support (AU and VST3) is listed as coming soon, with no confirmed timeline.
