Reverb plugins are getting so sophisticated these days that there seems to be a new parameter added to every new version. That’s great if you have the time to tweak, but most of us would just like to get a good sound as soon as possible and get back to mixing. That’s why PSP’s EasyVerb has always been a favorite because it’s setup is so. . .easy. EasyVerb now has a new updated version, but PSP also gave everyone a Christmas present with a scaled down version called PSP Chamber, which is free.
Let’s talk about EasyVerb though, since Chamber works the same but with only the chamber algorithm, as the name implies.
EasyVerb consists of ten algorithms: Ambience, Room, Chamber, Club, Hall, Arena, Cathedral, Spring, Plate and Reverse. Each of algorithm exists in three variations, with the Legacy variation being the room tuning from PSP EasyVerb version 1, and the new variations Alt1 and Alt2.
Each of the algorithms can also be set to one of three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large, and they each have adjustable parameters for Decay (reverb time), Damp (high frequency damping to simulate darker rooms) and Predelay, which is on a horizontal slider.
Let There Be EQ
An interesting feature that you won’t find in many reverb plugins is the 3-band EQ section that includes a low shelving EQ, middle peaking EQ, and a high shelving EQ. Each band has a Gain and a Frequency control so you can fine tune the frequency response of the reverb algorithm that you’ve selected.
The bottom row of controls features a Width, Mix and Output, with a 3 segment level LED meter showing -30, -10 and -3 levels. A Proc button (for Processor) turns the plugin’s processing on or off. When turned off, no input signal is passed to the reverberation algorithm, but the reverb still works, so the reverb tail will not be cut off abruptly as soon as you press the button.
As I stated above, the PSP Chamber plugin is free, and EasyVerb is only $49, which is a steal considering the sound quality you receive. Yes, there is a 30 day trial period. Both plugins work on both PCs and Macs and in all plugin formats.
