The one thing we all hate is the inevitable troubleshooting that comes with having a studio. Sooner or later something won’t be working the way you expected, and trying to find out where the problem lies really sucks the creativity from a session. One little device that can make that process go a lot more quickly is the Xvive AT-2 Audio Tester Pro which sets up a number of quick tests to make sure the analog signal is passing the way it should. Let’s look at what it can do.
On it’s most basic level, the AT-2 is a signal generator that outputs a 1 kHz sine wave or pink noise audio signal through XLR male, 1/4″, and 1/8″ connectors. It has three output level options: -10 dB, -20 dB, and -40 dB, which makes it easy to always get back to the right level.
Next, it’s an XLR cable tester, which tests whether all three pins of the XLR cable are functioning properly. If something isn’t sounding the way you think it should, the first thing to test is the cable!
The AT-2 also measures the input volume level of the XLR female connector, and will test the output voltage of the phantom power to ensure that both pins are functioning properly.
Finally, when an audio source is connected to the XLR female / 1/4″ input, you can monitor the signal with headphones or speakers via the 1/8″ headphone jack.
While the applications in the studio are on the analog sides of the DAW, you can see how this could be invaluable for live situations, where tracking down problems is an every day matter. It’s worth it’s weight in gold just for doing line checks.
