QuietFormat has released MELINO, a sample-based virtual instrument that blends the warmth of several authentic vintage instruments in a modern, intuitive interface. It’s currently on an introductory sale for $39 (regular $69) until August 14.
MELINO features six distinct vintage instruments: Melloflute, Melloviolin, Xylophone (C3–D6), Vintage EP, W-200, and Home Piano. Each can be played solo or layered for a more textured tone.
Every voice has independent volume and pan controls, and the EP-style patches add tremolo and stereo options for extra flavor.
Rather than aiming for hyper-realism, MELINO leans into character, and I loved that. The sounds embrace subtle imperfections, the tape-like quirks, soft noise, and tonal color shifts that give vintage instruments their charm.
This makes it ideal for lofi, ambient, cinematic, and electronic productions where a nostalgic feel is part of the sound design.

MELINO includes four global effects: Key Noise (to add mechanical realism), Reverb, Tape saturation, and Delay. These can be dialed in to taste, depending on whether you prefer dry or processed sounds.
The workflow encourages creative layering. You can stack a Melloflute with a slightly detuned Home Piano, run it through Tape, and instantly have a moody key patch dripping with character.
I also love the interface design. MELINO is an absolute delight in terms of looks. The moody pastel color palette reminds me of old home keyboards. For those who grew up on slightly worn keys and creaky pedal actions, it’s an instant nostalgia hit.
Most importantly, though, the instrument is a treasure trove of vintage tones once you start playing it.

The Xylophone has that charming, woody bite that’s perfect for layering with softer instruments. The Melloviolin brings airy warmth, and the Vintage EP can go from soft lounge keys to shimmering tremolo swells.
It’s surprisingly versatile, but always with that dusty, analog soul.
MELINO runs on macOS 10.13+ and Windows 10+ (64-bit only), with universal support for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It works as a standalone app or in VST3/AU-compatible DAWs, and requires at least 8GB RAM (16GB recommended).
If you’re chasing the personality and depth of real vintage instruments, MELINO offers an inspiring and instantly playable way to get there. It’s a strong pick for anyone wanting to inject some retro magic into their productions.
Please note that the intro price expires on August 14th.
