Shadaloo Audio DSP has released Vinland Drive, a free vintage tape emulator plugin for macOS and Windows.
We recently covered Wide, Shadaloo Audio DSP’s free stereo and spatial enhancement plugin, and the developer also released H, a free tone and loudness enhancer, earlier this year.
Those were both decent plugins, and Vinland Drive continues in the same pay-what-you-want direction. You can enter zero as the price on Gumroad and download it for free, with donations available if you want to support future development.
At first glance, I thought Vinland Drive was a simpler tape emulator than it really is. The workflow is definitely simple, though, with Input, Heat, and Output controls handling everything. Automatic gain compensation is included to help keep things manageable as you push the signal harder.
The main idea is to let you emulate the tone and movement of tape with a single knob instead of a huge panel of separate controls. The Heat knob controls tape-style saturation, soft compression, coloration, low-end rounding, and softening of the high frequencies.
Shadaloo Audio DSP says the plugin uses level-dependent harmonic response and hysteresis-style saturation with frequency-aware harmonic shaping. In plain terms, it should react to the incoming signal more like a dynamic tape-inspired processor than a static saturation curve.
That said, I was surprised that Vinland Drive also includes the lo-fi side of tape emulation, but it keeps those parts tied together in a simple workflow. You get drift, wow, flutter, stereo crosstalk, decorrelation, noise texture, dropouts, and age-style artifacts all mixed into the processing.
To be honest, the one-knob-style approach to tape imperfections is both a strength and a limitation. Some users prefer separating saturation from wow, flutter, noise, and drift, especially when they only want the harmonic response of tape. But if you want a quick sweep from cleaner thickening to a more characterful tape tone, this simplified control set makes sense.
There are already plenty of tape plugins out there, including our own free BPB Saturator Plus for saturation and BPB Dirty VHS for the lo-fi flavor. Still, Vinland Drive does its job well, and it is worth a look if you enjoy collecting different flavors of tape-style saturation and movement.
Vinland Drive is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and VST3 format for 64-bit Windows. The current Windows build is not digitally signed, so your system may show a security warning before installation.
