Soundtoys offers the SpaceBlender reverb plugin for free until May 22, 2025.

Soundtoys is one of the most generous non-indie developers on the market. I recall them offering the Soundtoys Effect Rack for free during the pandemic. And they provided various premium plugins for free on different occasions.

Our reader Wiseman summed it up nicely in a recent comment: “Soundtoys have now given me these plugins for free (since 2015): Devil-Loc, Little AlterBoy, Little MicroShift, Little Plate, Little PrimalTap, Little Radiator, PhaseMistress, Tremolator. I just love this company!”

However, the latest freebie from Soundtoys is perhaps their most generous one to date. If you like Valhalla’s Supermassive plugin (and who doesn’t?), prepare to have your socks blown off into space by this, as the Soundtoys marketing team puts it, “Imaginary Space Machine.”

Simply put, SpaceBlender is an innovative reverb plugin designed to generate massive, larger-than-life reverbs for ambient music and sound design. Yes, “innovative” is an often misused word in music software journalism, but that is not the case here.

Unlike other reverbs that are based on delay networks or convolution, Spaceblender takes a different approach. The underlying algorithm was inspired by swarm synthesis with the idea of creating reverbs that evolve over time.

I wanted to test SpaceBlender briefly before writing this article and ended up spending over an hour in the DAW, experimenting with it on various sound sources. I spent most of that time in awe of how breathtakingly good it sounded.

Our reader Robin recently wrote in a comment on Bedroom Producers Blog: “Spaceblender is amazing, it’s a close second best to Supermassive for inventive ambient space, Soundtoy’s best giveaway since Little Plate!”

And even though SpaceBlender delivers some of the most complex reverbs I’ve heard in a plugin, it’s not complicated to use. Soundtoys has simplified the control scheme, allowing even an absolute beginner to figure it out in a matter of minutes.

The interface has five knobs and three buttons. I won’t go into detail for each one because it’s mostly self-explanatory. You’ll use the Time, Color, Texture, Mod, and Mix knobs to adjust the size, tone, and intensity of the reverb.

But most of the magic happens in the Visualizer, which has a dual functionality. It allows you to see the reverb in real-time while also enabling you to shape it. Simply click and drag the visualizer to transform the reverb. It almost feels like magic when you use it for the first time.
