There isn’t much more to say about Zebralette; it has been among the best free software synths for a very, very long time, and the excitement about this new release is merited.
For anyone new to Zebralette, it’s the much-loved little brother of u-he’s premium synth Zebra, and you can find out more about it (and other great synths) from our best free synthesizer VST article.
Zebralette 3 previews the new oscillator engine of its big brother, but Zebralette has always been more than a free taster; it’s a fantastic synth that’s perfectly at home in any setup.

Zebralette 3.0 release candidate signifies a few things, including new features, improved performance, a new licensing system, and perhaps most importantly, an imminent official release.
We don’t have specific release dates, but it seems that an official version of the flagship Zebra 3 synth could be just around the corner, too.
Mention of a new licensing system might have raised a few alarm bells, prompting thoughts of a tedious or intrusive activation process.
There’s no need for panic; the new system uses License Cards: PNG images that store serial numbers in metadata, providing a simple and efficient way to keep all your licences in one place.
You can hear more about License Cards from Urs Heckman in the video below: no subscription model, and no online requirements.

There are still some known issues, and two of the most commonly experienced problems are glitches from the experimental wave file import feature and crashes caused by the undo/redo system.
You should also be aware that u-he removed some parameters from the automation parameter list and assigned new parameter IDs to others, which may cause some crossed wires for existing projects.
While u-he irons out known issues, there are plenty of new features and improvements to get excited about. Here are the highlights:
- Improved CPU performance
- License Cards
- Osc wavetable mode: phase modulation is now in the modulation target list, and a new DC block option is available
- ModNoise modulation source
- MSEG can now be used as a VCA source
- Osc FX bypass button
- Improved S&H trigger system
- Enhanced preferences for mouse wheel, trackpad, and animation handling
After a couple of years in beta testing, the wait is finally over (almost); well done, u-he!
