For those finding music production to be a hair-brained mess – even in 2025 – Boombox.io has an app for that. The solution to the problem, according to Boombox’s Cofounder and Head of Product India Lossman, is a unified platform instead of a decentralized, ad-hoc collection of different solutions.
Today’s music production tools are almost miraculous, especially for those old enough to remember the stone age tools of yore. Still, there’s a downside: sophisticated DAWs, dazzling AI apps, distribution silos, and instant sharing and uploading tools are a godsend. But they can also be overwhelming, frustrating, and confusing.
Stuff gets lost, versions get jumbled, and creativity becomes a chaotic, disjointed grind.
Enter Boombox, a company DMN first profiled back in 2023. That’s when this upstart platform first gained serious traction by simplifying production overload, while attracting capital to solve problems. Now, we’re partnering to further grow the platform.
Boombox’s mission, simply stated, is to “untangle this mess” and “give creators easy-to-use tools to collaborate, connect, and earn revenue from their art while engaging with fans on terms, times, and conditions of their own choosing”.
According to Lossman, the platform started as “the brainchild of SoundCloud and Dropbox.” But file storage & sharing designed specifically for musicians is just the beginning of a consolidated concept to help producers, engineers, and musicians create more fluidly.
Indeed, the broader building philosophy at Boombox seems less about inventing new wheels, and more about combining existing wheels to create a new supercar. For example, Boombox also offers great playlisting features for producers and artists to showcase and share their unreleased work privately. According to Jordan Schneider, Boombox’s Head of Marketing, “Think Disco plus SoundCloud Pro and you get the idea”.
Distribution is also integrated directly into the platform, akin to Distrokid but within the Boombox ecosystem. That eliminates the need to jump to yet another platform to distribute music, transfer detailed metadata, and cross-reference versions. Embedded distribution also consolidates the destination for analytics, playlist tracking, and other monitoring tasks.
Boombox.io’s $7 million funding round in 2023 was led by Forerunner, which helped fuel the development of several AI components.
That includes Boombot, an AI-powered collaborator. Lossman says that AI has been rapidly integrated into the platform to augment several production chores, including stem-splitting,lyrics generation, and adding metadata to audio files.
But when it comes to AI, Boombox takes a specific approach. While the platform offers AI enhancers to assist in the creative process, it consciously steers clear of the Suno-style generative AI solutions.
AI is a delicate topic in the music industry, though Boombox clearly emphasizes augmentation and creative assistance. According to Lossman, the focus is on enhancing the artists’ creativity, not replacing it. Boombox has a broader ethos of empowering musicians and producers while protecting their intellectual property (their entire leadership team signed this Statement on AI Training to drive it home).
“Our customers know their data isn’t being fed into algorithms for training purposes without their knowledge,” Schneider relayed. “Also, Boombox’s enterprise-grade security means that creators control who can access their work.
There are a ton of other snazzy-but-functional features, including real-time collaboration capabilities.
Producers can quickly add collaborators, leave time-stamped feedback, chat within the platform, and even whip up song-split contracts. Intelligent version control ensures that all changes are tracked, and mobile apps for iOS and Android enable collaboration on the go.
Organization is a beautiful thing, and thankfully, the future of music production is getting less messy. Plenty of creators are still cobbling together disparate platforms and tools, though Boombox is steadily making many converts. Currently, Boombox boasts a user base of more than 200,00 producers and artists, an impressive level of traction.
