Wide Blue Sound has released Tracer, a beat-synced oscilloscope plugin that is free for a limited time. After the promo period, it will cost $39.

There is no clear information about when the free offer ends, so if this sounds interesting, download it as soon as you can.

To get it, you can simply enter your email on the product page, and you will receive a download link almost immediately. Mine arrived within minutes. No account or registration is needed after that. You just install the plugin and run it.

The timing on this one is funny for me. Yesterday, I was searching for a free beat-synced waveform display plugin to use on my MacBook Air. I wanted to compare pre- and post-processing waveforms by placing an oscilloscope before and after a plugin in my chain.

I ended up downloading Oszillos-Mega-Scope and was annoyed that I could not remember any of the free options I had covered on BPB in the past. There is the excellent s(M)exoscope, which was recently updated, but I could not get it to work on my M1 Mac.

So it is a nice coincidence that Tracer showed up today. It does have a sidechain overlay for comparing two signals, which technically covers what I was after, but it requires routing a sidechain in your DAW rather than just dropping a second instance on another channel like you can in Oszillos-Mega-Scope.

A minor convenience thing, but worth noting.

Tracer has three view modes. Beat and Bar are both tempo-synced to your DAW, and Waveform is a free-scrolling display that simply follows the audio as it plays.

There is also a sidechain overlay that lets you route a second signal and see both waveforms at once, which is useful for comparing the pre- and post-processed signals (as I was doing yesterday) or comparing other stuff, like a kick against a bass or a trigger against a track.

There’s also the Sum Sidechain mode, which combines both signals into one waveform with color shifts showing which signal is louder at any given point.

The plugin is GPU-accelerated, running at 60fps with CPU overhead typically under 1% of a single core. It has zero latency and does not color or affect the audio in any way.

You can display the signal in mono, stereo, left, or right channel modes, though there is no mid/side option in this version. The display scale ranges from -24 to +24 dB.

One thing I absolutely loved, though, is how polished it looks. The lines are clean and anti-aliased, and the built-in themes are well designed. You can create and share custom themes as .wbstheme files.

There is also a white-label feature where you can upload your own logo as a transparent PNG and have it react to the beat, which turns the plugin into a simple visualizer.

If you want to see exactly how it looks before downloading, the product page has an interactive demo that runs the full plugin GUI right in your browser. I’ve never seen that before, running a full plugin GUI in the browser, so kudos to the devs.

Tracer is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows.
