The Witch’s Brew Bitcrusher is a new plugin from Kushview, the developer behind the modular VST plugin host, Element.
Witch’s Brew Bitcrusher is available in AU, VST3, LV2, and CLAP formats for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
The plugin has a regular retail price of $10, but you can download it for free until Halloween (October 31, 2025).
Given how well this plugin visually represents the spookiest time of the year, it’s easy to imagine that Witch’s Brew Bitcrusher is just a bit of Halloween fun, but there’s more to it than that.
Once you get past the eerie-looking witch woman, you’ve got a plugin that takes a more organic approach to a very digital effect.
Although you can adjust the sample rate and bit depth as you’d expect to, Witch’s Brew Bitcrusher’s dynamic bubble modulation system (witch’s cauldron) offers something less static than typical bitcrushing.
The science behind this witchcraft is that Witch’s Brew Bitcrusher utilizes dual sine waves with a 1.7x harmonic relationship to generate bubble patterns that continuously modulate the sample rate and bit depth.
The result is a digital degradation effect that evolves over time, with random pops that add to the bitcrusher’s organic character.
In addition to the parameters already mentioned, you can adjust the Bubble rate and intensity, Brew intensity, and Fizz amount.
There are also wet/dry Mix and output Gain controls.
Witch’s Brew Bitcrusher includes 12 factory presets to help you get started, and you can save/recall custom presets.
The animated GUI isn’t just eye-candy; the witch’s eyes change color according to the frequency content, and the cauldron/bubbles react to audio levels. It is definitely an interesting form of visual feedback.
If the spooky witch lady scares you too much, you can always check out free alternatives, like DigiDestroy by HOFA-Plugins.
Despite the playful animated interface, Kushview put serious work into Witch’s Brew Bitcrusher, with pro-grade DSP and a modular architecture featuring separate components for bit-depth reduction, sample-rate reduction, fizz generation, and bubble generation.
The plugin typically runs with under five percent CPU usage.
Witch’s Brew Bitcrusher is suitable for everything from lo-fi and ambient music production to media composition and retro video game sounds.
