XLN Audio RC-20 Retro Color is 60% off on Plugin Boutique

Plugin Boutique is offering XLN Audio’s hugely popular RC-20 Retro Color for $39 until June 14, 2026. The regular price is $99, so this is a 60% discount.

RC-20 Retro Color has been around for a while, but it remains one of the most recognizable character plugins for lo-fi, vintage, and slightly broken textures. I think most people reach for the RC-20 first when they reach for a lo-fi plugin.

It gives you six effect modules that can be used separately or together. Most of them are self-explanatory, but here’s a quick rundown.

Noise adds vinyl crackle, tape hiss, studio ambiance, circuit hum, stompbox static, and other layers of background texture. I usually skip this because I prefer layering my own collection of noise samples, but it’s still convenient when in a hurry.

Wobble is one of my favorites here. It handles pitch movement, including the wow and flutter behavior associated with tape machines and unstable playback devices. There is also a stereo mode in the Wobble section that can push the effect toward a chorus-like movement when used more subtly.

Distort covers saturation and fuzz-style color, while the Digital module handles sample-rate and bit-depth reduction for old sampler-style crunch. Both sections include focus controls, so you can keep the processing away from parts of the frequency range you want to leave cleaner.

Space adds a pretty solid reverb/resonator effect, and Magnetic simulates tape-style wear, flutter, and volume dropouts (another personal favorite).

The result can be subtle, as in adding just a tiny bit of movement to a flat sound, but you can also make a clean sound feel like it came from a badly damaged cassette.

One of the best workflow features, though, is the Magnitude slider. It works as a global amount control for the whole plugin and scales the six main module knobs and parts of the master section at once.

This makes it very easy to automate RC-20 for intros, breakdowns, transitions, or whatever you want to modulate with a bit of lo-fi treatment.

The audio generally passes through the modules from left to right, although the Noise module can be routed post-chain. Obviously, noise at the beginning of the chain gets distorted, crushed, filtered, and wobbled along with the source, while post noise stays cleaner.

RC-20 also gives you a nice selection of presets for drums, keys, guitars, bass, full mixes, and post-production. You can also save your own user presets, set a startup preset, and use XLN’s CloudSync service to keep user presets available across computers.

RC-20 Retro Color runs on macOS 10.13 or later with Apple Silicon native support, and Windows 7 through 11. It is available in VST, AU, and AAX formats on macOS, and VST and AAX formats on Windows.
