Bjango has released Double Freak, a free dual oscillator frequency follower plugin for macOS and Windows.
Double Freak is one of the several entries I really liked in this year’s KVR Developer Challenge. I will cover a few more challenge entries separately (James also checked some of them out here and here), but this one stood out to me because it’s fun and also useful for sound design.
Bjango has released several cool plugins this year, and Double Freak is the developer’s free challenge entry. I also like the interface. Those buttons look super clean, but it’s also fun to look at with the characters at the top.
I have been using Double Freak in my sound design workflow over the past few days as a quick way to turn simple sounds into something more interesting.
The plugin tracks the pitch of incoming audio and uses it to drive two oscillators. Each oscillator can play sawtooth, square, or triangle waves, with octave and pitch offsets.

Glide changes how tightly the oscillators follow the input. Faster settings lock in closely, while slower settings glide into place and feel less predictable.
The mixer blends Osc 1, Osc 2, and the dry input. You can thicken the source, push the synth layer forward, or replace the input with something more extreme.
Double Freak works best with monophonic audio, such as a vocal line, bassline, melody synth, or other tonal source. With polyphonic and atonal input, pitch tracking gets erratic, but that can also sound cool, and I’ve been testing it on some cinematic stuff with great results.
Env Mod and Decay add a pitch envelope at the start of notes, so the oscillators can quickly bend up or down. Channel linking lets stereo channels track independently for a wider effect or stay locked together for focus.
Double Freak also includes two analog-modeled distortion types after the mixer. Since the dry signal can be distorted too, you can use it as a distortion effect by turning down the oscillators.
Double Freak is available as an AUv3 plugin for macOS 14 or later and as a VST3 plugin for macOS 13 or later and Windows 10 or later. It is free, with no ads or analytics. It’s a 48 MB download.
