DAWJunkie, the developer behind Padness 2 Jr, LeadOff Jr, and various other quirky but awesome freebies, is back with another freebie – the DT-600 Mini.

DT-600 Mini is based on the 1980s Casio MT-600 keyboard.

The Casiotone MT-600 is one of those keyboards many musicians had as a kid, without realizing the sounds are actually pretty cool.

Well, pretty cool in a so-bad-it ’s-good way if you’re a fan of retro lo-fi sounds.

As a result, Casio’s MT-600 is a must-have flea market or car boot sale purchase because it’s a cheap way to bring authentic 1980s pop music and video game sounds to your modern production.

The MT-600 isn’t a typical synth, at least not in the sense of being able to shape sound and tweak parameters; it functions more like the average Casiotone keyboard.

However, the MT-600 features Casio’s SD (Spectrum Dynamic) engine, which is a hybrid blend of digital waveforms and an analogue VCF.

So, the MT-600 is either a cool synth dressed as a bog-standard Casiotone keyboard, or it’s a Casiotone keyboard masquerading as a synth, depending on how you look at it.

Either way, it’s a retro keyboard with cool retro sounds, and DAWJunkie is giving us those sounds for free.

The upside of DAWJunkie’s offering is that, in addition to eight original sounds, you have envelope and filter controls that the original hardware lacked.

You have ADSR faders to shape the sound, and a filter with Resonance, Cutoff, and Envelope controls.

Further along the interface, you have Crunch, Delay, and Reverb knobs.

If you look at the top of the GUI, you’ll find a Unison knob that widens the sound.

The thing that this synth does best, in my opinion, is the quintessentially 80s plucky/percussive sounds that run through every major movie soundtrack of the era.

Great 80s movie themes always have these sounds that provide rhythm under the hook or become more melodic (while maintaining rhythm) during breaks.

DT-600 Mini features around 50 presets, and if you get into Harold Faltermeyer mode, you can get lost in 80s nostalgia for quite some time.

As usual, DAWJunkie offers a premium version with additional features, and you can upgrade for just $9.95 for a limited time.
