Developer DAWJunkie has released Knobs, a free random-effects processor for macOS and Windows.

We’ve been featuring DAWJunkie regularly for a little while now, and over that time, there are a few things we’ve come to expect from every release.

The first thing we’ve come to expect is seriously usable sounds wrapped up in a playful interface, often with a quirky name.

Another thing we’ve come to expect is user-friendly freebies that overdeliver, and part of that comes from the quirky character of some titles.

But the main thing we’ve come to expect from DAWJunkie is something different. For example, if DAWJunkie emulates a synth, it’s typically some retro, budget-friendly gem, rather than one of the usual suspects.

This time, we have something different, even by DAWJunkie standards.

Knobs is a random-effects processor with 20 unlabelled knobs.

The plugin is available in AU, VST, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.

The idea is that Knobs will push us to trust our ears more and, of course, provide a vehicle for those happy accidents we love in music.

In addition to the 20 unlabelled knobs, the plugin offers three levels of randomization, letting you aim for wholesale changes or subtle variation.

Obviously, with use, you’ll become more familiar with the structure of Knobs and be able to shape effects with more purpose, but that’s not really where the fun is.

If you stumble upon a happy accident, you can save it as a preset for future recall.

Since there’s an immediate temptation to hit one of the random buttons too many times, Knobs offers 20 steps of undo.

The irony of a plugin that strives for happy accidents is that you may spend quite some time cycling through variations before anything sounds decent, because happy accidents in music tend to come when least expected, not on demand.

But you might hit the jackpot on the first attempt; it’s random.

The developer says, “It could make it better or worse, but there’s only one way to find out,” and that’s as DAWJunkie as it gets.
