This week at Amsterdam Dance Event, a Brussels startup is asking DJs to work with a parameter most club mixers ignore. The Ambrio Spatial Performance Mixer, or SPM, is in use at Currents, FIBER’s spatial sound programme at Loods6, on Friday 23 October, with two hands-on masterclasses at the same venue the following day. It is billed as the first DJ mixer built for intuitive 3D spatial control.

The premise is simple. Most club systems receive a stereo signal, however many cabinets surround the floor. Immersive platforms such as d&b Soundscape exist, but they generally depend on dedicated processing, software and an engineer standing between the DJ and the speakers. Ambrio’s position is that spatial placement belongs on the channel strip, alongside gain, EQ and filter, under the performer’s hands.

At its core the SPM is a five-channel DJ mixer, and on that level it is conventional. Each channel carries trim, four-band EQ, a high-pass/low-pass filter and cue. Behind those controls, every channel can be positioned independently through 360 degrees.

A custom rendering algorithm maps stereo source material onto whatever speaker array is installed, from any manufacturer, with no external processor or software. Spatial operation needs a minimum of four speakers, and the analogue main outputs scale to 8.1 on balanced XLR.

The algorithm also manages output energy, holding perceived loudness steady whether the mix is folded down to a stereo pair or spread across six cabinets. This is more significant than it sounds. Without compensation, moving a source from one speaker to several produces audible level jumps, the artefact that tends to make spatial mixing feel like a gimmick on a dancefloor.

Connectivity reflects a hybrid brief. Inputs comprise four RCA line pairs, two RCA phono inputs with custom-built preamps, two XLR/TRS combo inputs for microphone or instrument, and a USB-C sound card for streaming from a DAW. Alongside the mains sit four balanced booth outputs, headphone cue, a stereo record output, an effects send and return, and bidirectional audio over Ethernet.

In performance, the spatial layer is designed to be played rather than programmed, though it can be both. Sources move in real time, while reverb and a spatial delay travel around the room instead of sitting as a wash over the mix. Effects respond to the room’s acoustics and speaker placement, and automated movements and transitions can be prepared in advance. A display switches between performance and setup views, and a large one-touch reset button is pitched as a tool for transitions and peaks.

Monitoring is the detail most likely to persuade working DJs. Spatial monitoring runs on a four-point booth configuration with adjustable delay, so placement can be judged from behind the decks. External control is thorough: MIDI and OSC, CV sync, an expression pedal input, and direct integration with Ableton Live for hybrid sets.

Nicolas Geysens, Ambrio’s co-founder, frames the spatial controls as an extension of technique rather than a replacement for it. “It’s one more thing you can do, not the whole point,” he says, placing the SPM in the dub tradition of treating the mixer as an instrument.

The SPM has already been tested in serious company. ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U, DJ Fuckoff and mi-el played it through d&b Soundscape at CTM’s Exponential Function, Portable used it at Sweden’s Intonal Festival, and it featured at CTM 2026 in Berlin, where the Spatial Radiants bill included Blawan and Jensen Interceptor.

It is not yet on sale or available to pre-order, with shipping planned for 2027. In the meantime, the Ambrio Incubator Program is lending units to clubs, festivals, collectives and academic institutions across Europe, North America and Australia from this month, and a priority list is open at ambriosound.com.

The larger question concerns the rooms, not the mixer. Spatial mixing asks venues to treat speaker placement as a creative variable rather than a coverage problem, and most clubs are still built around a stereo field and a sweet spot. By removing the outboard rendering layer and the setup time, Ambrio has lowered the barrier to entry considerably. How far clubs, sound engineers and DJs take it will become clearer once incubator units start appearing in booths.
