GARUC Audio has released Prism Sat, a free analog-style saturation plugin for macOS and Windows.

The prism on the interface immediately reminded me of Pink Floyd, though I’m not sure if it’s an intentional reference. Either way, it gets bonus points from me, even though I’m more of a The Wall fan than a Dark Side of the Moon fan.

Prism Sat is built on the same DSP architecture as GARUC’s paid Tape Hyll plugin, and the developer describes it as carrying the DNA of the early first-generation digital tape emulations. Those early plugins were the first to translate the nonlinear behavior of tape into the digital world, and that’s the territory Prism Sat is aiming for.

The workflow is simple. If you push the signal into clipping, you get a blend of even and odd harmonics, with transients getting smoothed in the process.

You have an Input knob feeding the processor, a Process knob that sets the intensity and depth of harmonic generation, an Output knob, and a Dry/Wet control for parallel use.

There’s also a Cal (calibration) control for adjusting internal calibration, plus an Auto Gain function that dynamically compensates for level changes using either RMS or True Peak metering, so you can A/B without volume bias tricking you into thinking the processed version sounds better just because it’s louder. Small thing, but I think it’s super useful.

You get input and output meters, A/B parameter slots with a copy A-to-B function, a bypass switch, and a few factory presets to get you started. The UI is rescalable, and there are two themes to pick from (I prefer the dark one).

Whether you actually need another saturation plugin is, of course, the eternal question with these things. I have way too many already (and still use our own BPB Saturator a lot), but they all sound a bit different, and free ones with a clear character are always worth a shot.

That is, of course, if you’re not new to music production. In that case, I suggest downloading no more than a few free plugins.

GARUC Audio also has a few other freebies worth checking out alongside this one, including the Tape Hyll-derived Deess-ertic Lite de-esser and MacHead.

Prism Sat is available in 64-bit AAX, AU, and VST3 formats for macOS 12 through macOS 26 (Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows 10 or higher. It’s free, but you’ll need to add it to your cart on the GARUC Audio website to get the license.
