Developer Indossa Sounds has launched REAKTR Map Maker, a free Reaktor sample map generator.

Native Instruments Reaktor isn’t something we talk about every week around here, but we do see related releases pop up from time to time.

Sound Author’s Pristine FDN-style reverb, and the MRX90 cassette tape emulation are a couple of good examples.
We also had the entire Boscomac Collection, including The Chiller, a synth inspired by the ARP Omni, move to freeware a few years ago.

Now, we have a different sort of Reaktor-based release in REAKTR Map Maker.

REAKTR Map Maker is a browser-based utility that makes it easier to create, edit, and export Reaktor sample maps.

As we’ve discussed in recent Native Instruments articles, the hugely influential developer didn’t always get everything right.

I’ve never been a Reaktor user, so I’m speaking from second-hand information, but it seems the general Reaktor workflow is something Native Instruments didn’t get right.

I’ve been told by enough people that Reaktor is capable of great things, but the workflow is often convoluted, making simple things less clear than they should be.

One area where many people seem to share this opinion is sample mapping in Reaktor, and that’s where REAKTR Map Maker comes in.

The web-based utility lets you drag your WAV, FLAC, MP3, and AIFF files directly onto the website.

You can then perform basic edits such as fade in/out, velocity adjustments, and sample renaming.

There are also time-saving functions, such as the ability to batch-set root notes to C4, which is required for some Reaktor ensembles.

Once you’re done editing, you can export your finished map file.

REAKTR Map Maker takes all of the potentially overconvoluted processes out of Reaktor’s hands, and all you have to do is load your new map into Reaktor.

The developer created REAKTR Map Maker using Claude.ai.

Reaktor is a product that’s still kind of sitting in limbo.

The latest iteration, Reaktor 6, was released in late 2015, although there have been updates since then.

You can still purchase Reaktor 6 from Native Instruments for £179, but the product has long been rumoured to be discontinued.

While it’s not discontinued, it seems like any major developments have been shelved for some time.

So, it could be interesting to see what the future holds for Reaktor in the upcoming inMusic era.

It seems a shame to let a product that helped form the backbone of the company gather dust on the shelf. But it’s also a shame to create something powerful without making it easy for users to utilise that power.

For now, tools like REAKTR Map Maker might just make your Reaktor life easier!
