Remo De Vico has released LOOM, a free browser instrument for extreme time stretching, textures, pads, and drones.

Time stretching is a lot of fun. I use it for cinematic sound design all the time, mainly for turning everyday sounds into otherworldly textures and ambient drones.

LOOM makes that process even more fun by adding Drift and a built-in reverb to the stretching engine. You can really build some crazy stuff with this, especially if you like slow-moving layers and stretched-out background atmospheres.

I need to point this clearly, though: LOOM is not a plugin. It is a browser-based HTML instrument that can run standalone on your computer. It works offline and needs no installation.

The workflow is simple. You load a sample, choose a region if needed, audition it, set the stretch controls, render the result, and export it as WAV or AIFF. Supported source formats include WAV, AIFF/AIF, MP3, and FLAC.

The core controls are Stretch, Pitch, Weave, Scatter, and Drift. Stretch changes the length without changing pitch, while Pitch is handled separately in semitones. Weave controls how many grains overlap, going from rough and pulsing to smoother and glassier textures.

Scatter changes how much phase information is invented, and Drift lets the reading position wander so the texture breathes and changes over time. Reverb and Size are applied after rendering, so you can adjust them immediately without running the full stretch process again.

There are also Gain, Normalize, Mono to Stereo, and Reverse options. The mono-to-stereo mode is especially useful for turning a mono sound into a wide stereo texture using two independent phase passes.

The download also includes HTML Instruments, a Max for Live device that opens LOOM directly inside Ableton Live. That part requires Ableton Live 12 and Max 9. You can also run LOOM standalone by opening the HTML file and routing your computer or tablet output like any other instrument.
