Developer MUEDsp has released two free macOS plugins, MUEDsat and MUEDlim.
Both plugins are taken from MUEDsp masterchain, a mastering suite that is currently in development. According to the developer Atsushi, each plugin is an actual stage from the master-bus chain used by the developer, pulled out and made free.
So basically, these are not stripped-down demos or time-limited trials. We are getting parts of the full product for free.
Again, I am getting a strong vibe from the website, but the plugins felt well-made during testing. I signed up, and the download link arrived instantly. It is a simple macOS installer, and the download is around 4 MB.
MUEDsat is basically a transformer saturation plugin with four main controls. Drive pushes the transformer-style harmonic stage, Mix blends the processed and dry signals for parallel saturation, Air adds a bit of sheen in the highs, and Output trims the level.
The developer says MUEDsat is zero-latency and uses ADAA to avoid oversampling artifacts. I tested the saturator on some bass and percussion takes, and it sounded pretty good. You can push it harder for more audible distortion, but I liked it more as a subtle addition to bass and drums, where it added some weight without making the sound feel obviously distorted.
MUEDlim is the simpler of the two. It is a true-peak limiter with only Input and Ceiling controls, plus an Active/Bypass switch. Input drives loudness into the limiter, while Ceiling sets the true-peak ceiling from -3 to 0 dBTP, with -1 dBTP as the default.
MUEDlim is designed to catch inter-sample peaks and keep true peaks below the ceiling you set. It is not trying to be a complicated mastering limiter with lots of pages and modes. The cool thing is that you can insert it, set the ceiling, and move on.
Both MUEDsat and MUEDlim are free, with no locked features or expiry. The only catch is that you need to enter an email address to receive the download link. The plugins are available for macOS in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
