There’s a technique that experienced recording engineers have relied on for years, pairing a ribbon microphone with a large-diaphragm condenser on the same source. The ribbon softens the top end and adds warmth, while the condenser delivers clarity and presence. The problem has always been the setup. You need two stands, two preamps, careful positioning, and a lot of patience getting the phase right so the two signals actually play nicely together. One slip and you’ve got cancellation problems that are hard to chase down later. Latvian manufacturer JZ Microphones decided there had to be a better way, and the result is the new MU-1, a microphone that houses both capsule types in a single body, phase-aligned and level-matched right out of the box.

JZ Microphones MU-1

Two Capsules, One Body

The MU-1 was designed in collaboration with Grammy-winning producer and engineer Marc Urselli, who has built a career working with artists including U2, Nick Cave, Foo Fighters, Lou Reed, and Elton John.

Urselli had long used the ribbon-plus-condenser approach in his sessions, and the MU-1 grew directly from that experience.

Inside the mic body, JZ placed a ribbon element using a 1.2 micrometer foil motor alongside the Golden Drop large-diaphragm condenser capsule from the company’s acclaimed Black Hole series.

The two are physically aligned within the housing, so phase coherence is built into the design rather than something you dial in after the fact.

Dual Output Architecture

A single 5-pin XLR carries both signals out of the mic, along with an included breakout Y-cable that splits them into two standard 3-pin XLR connections. This allows the you to place ribbon and condenser signals on separate channels in your DAW.

From there, you can record each signal independently, blend them during mixing, or simply pick whichever one works best for the track.

Because the level matching and phase alignment are already handled, you skip the guesswork that typically comes with a two-mic setup.

The condenser signal path is transformerless, while the ribbon side uses a custom transformer matched to that foil motor.

Handcrafted and Built to Last

JZ has been hand-building microphones in Latvia since 2007, and the MU-1 continues that tradition. The patent-pending hybrid capsule architecture is unique to this design, making the MU-1 the first microphone of its kind to combine these two transducer types in a single level-matched, phase-coherent body.

The mic ships in a wooden storage box with a custom shockmount, the 5-pin to dual XLR cable, and an ownership certificate. And there’s also a 5-year warranty included.

The MU-1 is currently available for pre-order at $1,999 (regular MSRP $2,499). You can find out more here, or watch the video below.
