Some people are looking for a vintage sound while others want to take it to another level. If you’re in the latter category, then it’s time to take a look at KIT Plugins new NP A67 Altec Mixer plugin, a reproduction of the mixer/preamp used at the legendary Norman Petty Studios in Clovis, New Mexico. This was at the heart of the “Clovis Sound” made famous by early recordings of Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, and many others.

A rack-mounted tube mixer, originally designed as a radio station preamp, the Altec 1567A Tube Mixer Preamp was repurposed by Norman Petty in his late 1950s console. Known for its natural tube saturation, harmonic richness, mild distortion and low‑end warmth, Petty used three heavily modified units for L/C/R stereo signal paths.
The NP A67 blends authentic tube-driven tone with enhanced mid‑band control.
Key Features include an Input control that emulates the unit’s tube distortion when it’s pushed toward 0 dB, mirroring the natural compression of the original mixers.
While the bass and treble mimic the original vintage tone stacks, the mid peaking band is a modern tweak, allowing you to sweep between 200Hz to 2.5kHz to find the exact frequency that the track needs.
High-Pass and Low-Pass Filters provide studio‑grade control to focus or tame frequency content based on use case. There’s also a Hum control that recreates the noise generated by the vintage components.
The NP A67 plugin is now available for $49. It’s works on both PC and Mac and AAX, AU, VST3 plugin formats.
