The South got something to say and this time, it’s surprising. The legendary rap duo Outkast has just sued the artist Ovrkast over having a similar, ‘nearly identical’ name as them. According to the lawsuit filed, Ovrkast has been sued for trademark infringement, unfair competition and breach of contract for having a mark that causes confusion.
Ovrkast is a rapper and producer who recently landed production credits with Drake on the song ‘Make Them Pay’ from Iceman. He had also co-produced “Red Button” and “The Shoe Fits” from For All the Dogs.
Apparently, the two trademarks are so identical that they may be confused for affiliation, and that Ovrkast may be benefiting from the Outkast’s legacy and brand trust built over years. Ovrkast took to Instagram and posted a screenshot of one of the news reports on the matter, tagging both Andre 3000 and Big Boi with the caption “I thought it was love? (yes this is real)”
The complaint references Ovrkast’s supposed self admission on the matter as per a 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, where he said “The worst thing I get is like, ‘The n***a think he Outkast’… It’s like, ‘No, bro. I wasn’t even thinking about Outkast.’ Mad n***as do that shit. They read Ovrkast [as] Outkast.”
Other rappers came in support and expressed their surprise in the comment section of the post. Vince Staples even commented how “this is not hip hop,” while others seemed almost sure it was satire.
According to the lawsuit, there has been a previous agreement between the two entities where Ovrkast had agreed to a transition to a new name, spelt as Overkxst. The story is still developing.
