Polarity is a name that many readers will be very familiar with. The developer has now released Polarity-RES (v0.1.0), a free resonator effect for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

It wasn’t too long ago that we covered Polarity-MD, a free multiband dynamics processor (something like a four-band OTT).

But many of you will know Polarity best as a sound designer, musician, educator, and all-around Bitwig expert.

If you haven’t checked out the Polarity Music YouTube channels yet, you’ll find lots of useful tutorials and interesting tracks.

Polarity’s latest release is Polarity-RES, a free resonator effect, which offers up to 32 active filters.

Polarity-RES is available for macOS (VST3, AU, CLAP), Windows (VST3, CLAP, and Linux (VST3, CLAP).

It’s also available as a standalone application across all platforms.

The bulk of the interface is taken up by a large spectrum-graph editor, where you can create and edit up to 32 steep bandpass resonator dots.

The editor window displays incoming audio and lets you place or remove bandpass filters with left- and right-clicks, respectively.

Polarity says that this plugin turns noise into music, and it does, in a few ways.

Internal pink noise excitation lets you create drones or even pads out of nothing. The most interesting element of using the Noise control is that you can lock the plugin to a specific scale.

The editor will display note positions, allowing you to place your dots with harmonic precision, whether diatonic or dissonant.

There’s also a MIDI follow function so you can play the resonator like an instrument.

With up to 32 active bandpass filters, you can really play around with texture, whether that’s creating a drone to use as a pedal note or a dense atmosphere that sounds nothing like the original source.

Polarity-RES also allows you to hold the frequency spectrum of a specific section of the incoming audio. You can pull a particular part or sound from the audio to use as the foundation for something new.

The plugin also has a Learn function: when in use, it analyses the peaking frequencies and creates relevant bandpass filters.

In addition to scale selection and MIDI follow, the plugin has other features, like Spread and Frequency Offset, that let you play with pitch and space to think more musically, beyond just texture.

Polarity-RES is definitely an interesting tool for sound designers.
