Developer SaschArt has released DynamicEchoFree, a free dynamic delay plugin for macOS and Windows.

It’s been a busy couple of days for delay plugins. We’ve had Sonicora Audio’s LiquidTrail (free for a limited time), Overload Audio’s Echodude BBD-150 (vintage BBD delay emulation), and now we have DynamicEchoFree by SaschArt.

DynamicEchoFree offers something a little different because gain reduction drives the behaviour of the delay engine.

The plugin features a compressor section with typical Threshold, Ratio, Attack, and Release controls (there’s also a sidechain button).

The compressor section can operate in two modes: as a standard compressor and as a gain-reduction detector.

It’s the gain reduction analysis that makes this plugin interesting because that’s what dictates the behaviour of the delay engine.

In other words, you have a dynamic and more organic delay that responds directly to your input.

Your input can drive multiple linked delay parameters with independent depths and directions, making the effect even more dynamic.

You can also adjust the attack and release times of linked parameters to shape a suitable effect.

The delay engine has stereo/mono input modes and a Warp mode that adjusts the right channel relative to the left.

You have standard controls and features, such as Delay Time, Feedback, Pan Width, and Ping Pong, but it’s the adaptive nature of DynamicEchoFree that makes it unique.

The plugin also features a basic Filter and Mix section.

I’m a big fan of any effect that reacts and adapts to your input, whether that’s performing live or mixing pre-recorded tracks.

The level of organic variation you get from an effect that responds in real-time commonly sounds far more natural than any tweaking you might do after the fact.

I like the idea of this sort of dynamic delay on keys and guitar, because a standard, uniform delay can become a bit overbearing if not used carefully. And, in terms of live performance, I love anything that makes you think more about dynamics in your playing.

However, even when mixing vocals, a delay that matches the energy and intent of the delivery could be very useful.

You can download the plugin for free (donations are welcome), but you’ll need an account on the SaschArt website.

Alternatively, if you want a bit more, you can check out the commercial version of DynamicEcho for €25.

DynamicEchoFree is available in AU, VST2, and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
