On November 2, 2025, Vain Audio launched the Sentinel distortion engine, which is available for free download.
The indie dev says the banded distortion plugin is built for violent transformation and precise harmonic distortion.
The freeware plugin is available for macOS (Ventura and newer, AU, VST3, CLAP) and Windows (VST3, CLAP).
Vain Audio got straight to the point with distributing the plugin, as all you have to do is click the ‘Download’ button on the product page, at which point you’ll be redirected to a page with all of the dev’s plugins.
At that page, you can download either the macOS or Windows version, in the form of an unzipped exe or pkg file, requiring a single click for each.
So far, Vain Audio has produced a single intro YouTube demo for Sentinel, which showcases the plugin adding some dirt to synth riffs over a pounding industrial beat.

Sentinel’s main controls are Rate, Depth, Color, and Amount. You can further tweak the output with the central panel, which has the following parameters: Low, High, Pre Gain, Mix, Post Gain, as well as Octave and Sem controls.
The band parameters are designed for precision control over the sonic destruction, and you can further tune the dirt by tracking MIDI messages.
All that together creates quite a lot of customization under the hood, which you don’t always see from a freebie release.
I will say the interface could do with more contrast and a clearer / bigger font. Pretty much the whole interface is different shades of gray, which all glom together at first glance when you try to get a handle on the controls.
In the demo, we can hear that Sentinel adds a lot of presence to the signal, bringing it to the front of the mix and transforming the tone into a bold, aggressive sound.
The plugin would therefore be right at home with any kind of production that calls for an intense, punchy sound.
Naturally, though, with an effect as general as distortion, it could be used for any kind of production.
Vain Audio debuted as a company in 2023 and has been quite busy since then, launching seven plugins.
The developer plugins initially dropped as Windows-only releases, but the six currently-supported releases have since also received macOS releases.
