Mary J. Blige AI Campaign Implodes As Suno Claims Unauthorized Rep Fooled Company

Suno pulled its Mary J. Blige campaign after saying an unauthorized representative brokered the deal as AI criticism surged.

Suno has pulled its controversial Mary J. Blige campaign after claiming it had entered into a business deal with someone who lacked authority to represent the R&B icon.

The AI music company scrapped the advertisement after learning Blige was uncomfortable with the campaign. Suno said the unnamed person who arranged the deal had presented themselves as an official representative for the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.

“We entered into a business deal with someone who presented themselves as Ms. Blige’s official representative,” a Suno spokesperson told Variety. “As soon as we learned this was not the case, and that Ms. Blige was uncomfortable, we terminated the advertising campaign.”

The explanation made the situation even stranger. Blige plainly appeared in the studio footage, but agreeing to be recorded during a demonstration is not the same as approving an advertising campaign. Neither side has identified the alleged unauthorized representative or explained what Blige believed she was filming.

AllHipHop’s Daily News Service

Delivering news to inboxes since 1999. We break it. They take it. Get it first, straight from AllHipHop.

The commercial began circulating around August 30 and reportedly appeared as a promoted TikTok advertisement. It showed Blige listening as producers used Suno to generate and reshape a song. One version appeared to include a synthetic voice modeled after her sound.

Blige called the technology “pretty dope” and expressed interest in learning more about it.

Her comments made it appear that one of R&B’s most respected singers was endorsing a platform that creates entire songs from written instructions. Viral posts then claimed Blige had signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Suno, but neither side confirmed that figure.

As AllHipHop previously reported, fans quickly accused Blige of helping normalize technology they believe could replace musicians and imitate established artists.

The backlash arrived while major artists were already choosing sides in the AI music war.

Dr. Dre recently revealed that he uses AI to experiment with music he has already created. The legendary producer compared the technology to tools such as synthesizers and drum machines.

“I don’t see it as a threat,” Dre said. “I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating.”

Tyrese Gibson also defended “Celebrate Me,” a popular song co-written with Suno. He challenged human artists to create something better rather than complain.

SZA has taken the opposite position. The Grammy-winning singer said she feels “at war” with AI because of its effect on Black music. She also reported finding 238 of her songs, possibly including unreleased material, inside datasets assembled for AI music research.

“It’s happening disproportionately with Black music,” SZA said. “I’m also really offended by the type of Black music that’s coming out of AI. Weird, stereotypical struggle music.”

The database finding did not prove that Suno trained its platform on every listed SZA recording. It did intensify questions about whether artists know when their work is collected for AI development.

Jack Antonoff, the producer behind major records from Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey, described AI music as fake art and told its supporters to “drive right off that cliff.” Bette Midler went further, calling AI music “cultural genocide”.

That divide explains why the Blige commercial became toxic so quickly. Suno did not simply place her in an advertisement. The campaign appeared to put her on one side of a cultural fight involving creativity, consent and whether a machine can reproduce the emotional power that built her career.

The disaster also echoes Blige’s 2012 Burger King commercial. She later said an unfinished version aired without the concept she had approved. Burger King apologized for releasing it before all licensing and approvals were complete. Blige said this year that the humiliation still bothered her.

Now, another advertisement has vanished amid another dispute over approval.

Until someone identifies the person who brokered the Suno deal, the biggest question remains unanswered: how did an international AI company launch a Mary J. Blige campaign without confirming that her real team had authorized it?
