Developer Sender Spike has released DR.89, a free Roland TR-909 inspired drum machine plugin for Windows.

If the name Sender Spike sounds familiar, that’s because we’ve covered a few of this developer’s plugins recently, including the SN Zero hybrid FM synthesizer, the qb (Kyubi) multimode distortion, and the filter.tank dual filter.

SN Zero is one of the better free FM synths I’ve used recently, so when I saw a 909 plugin from the same developer, I was curious to hear what it would sound like.

DR.89 is not sample-based. It’s a fully synthesized drum machine modeled on the 909’s circuit topology, which Sender Spike confirms in the release notes. The developer says samples didn’t offer enough flexibility, so they built a drum synth tuned mostly to their own taste.

To my ears, it gets pretty close to the original 909. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, and you won’t find many unusual features here, but the basics are well covered.

I love that you can adjust the pitch on the bass drum, snare, hi-hats, toms, and pretty much every part of the kit. There’s a punch control on the kick, a snap control on the snare, accent and decay on the relevant voices, and individual level adjustments throughout.

The interface is clean and minimal, with everything laid out on a single panel. I like drum machines that work like this. Simple, easy to use, and super quick to fire up when you need a quick 909 pattern.

DR.89 is multi-out, with individual outputs available on channels 3 through 12 according to the developer (instrument channel mapping is in the manual).

This is a 909 emulation rather than a feature-stacked modern drum machine, so it won’t replace something like Battery or any of the more elaborate freebies out there. But for what it is, it sounds good, runs super lightweight, and stays out of the way while you have fun with 909 sounds.

The one downside is that this is Windows-only and not available for macOS. On the bright side, it’s very easy to download from the developer’s website with no signup or activation required.

DR.89 is available as a free 64-bit VST2 plugin for Windows.
